Inspiration
is not a problem, every day brings a different sky, the sea is
forever changing, birds and flowers are abundant. The local
fishing fleet moors in Elgol with one of Scotland's most
impressive backdrops, the Cuillin Mountains, rising behind them.
Each beach-combing expedition presents another scene to paint.
Often the floats themselves feel that they should have something
specific painted on them, whether its because they are badly
scraped in transit from the boat they came from, or
maybe
they were found in an particular gully that has cliffs with
nesting birds enclosing it, each float is unique. Not just by
its design but by its geographical resting place.
Three years ago there was an opportunity to re-open our village
shop. Elgol lies 15 miles down a single track road from
Broadford. It is a long way to go for a forgotten item, Likewise
it is a long journey when touring not to get a cup of tea at the
end of the road!.
The
shop has gone from strength to strength, not only can you find
my fishing floats by I have a selection of other crafts that are
made in Elgol, and a selection of postcards exclusive to the
Elgol Shop. My sister-in-law set a baking business, so we also
supply superb home baking to accompany that tea! The shop is
open all year round and stocks from groceries to woolly socks
and we try to help out with local information from boat trips to
weather forecast.
